Legal aliens, who temporarily reside in the United States and are eligible for employment, can obtain a work permit by submitting an application (Form I-765) to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). Applications are accepted electronically or by mail. The average processing time for Form I-765 is three months. Information on the status of your application is accessible on the USCIS website (egov.uscis.gov). Automatic updates are also available by email with registration.

Visit the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service website to access the status of your work permit application.

Enter your application receipt number in the appropriate field. The receipt number is available on documents sent by USCIS and contains 13 characters beginning with three letters. Omit letters and dashes and include all other characters.

Click on “Check Status” to view the current status of your application. The actions required to process your application will be displayed, and the current step will be highlighted. Requests for further evidence or originals of previously submitted documents will be noted. If action is required by you and you have not received notice by mail, contact USCIS customer service at 800-375-5283 for more information.

Sign up for automatic case updates by registering as an applicant customer. Updates will be sent automatically to you by email.
