Citizens or permanent residents of Australia who wish to become permanent residents of Canada can choose from a variety of immigration programs being offered by Canada to foreigners. Although there are different ways to apply, the main requirement is the possession of skills that will be beneficial to the Canadian economy. The Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website provides the details on how to apply under each program.

Determine what program works best for you and your family.You can apply as a skilled worker if you have a job offer or if your profession or trade is on the list of eligible occupations enumerated on CIC’s website (see Resources). You may apply as a business immigrant if you are willing to invest in the Canadian economy at least C$400,000 or $379,290 in U.S. dollars as of May 2010. You can apply under the Canadian experience class if you have worked in Canada.

A Canadian province or territory can nominate you to settle there (see Resources). If you already have a family member permanently residing in Canada, he can sponsor you.

If you want to go to Quebec, visit the province’s immigration website because it has a separate skilled workers program (see Resources).

Fill out the application forms. Once you have decided the immigration path you want to take, obtain the appropriate application package. You can download the forms from the CIC website. Prepare the check payment for the application fees indicated in the application package.

Submit your application. After completing the forms and gathering all the required documents, mail your application and check payment to the Consulate General of Canada in Sydney, Australia.

If you are applying under the federal skilled workers program, mail your application to the Centralized Intake Office in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Wait for your visa. Once your application is approved, the Canadian consulate office in Sydney, Australia will ask for your passport so you can receive your permanent resident visa.


  • Canada will only deal with paid representatives if they are lawyers who are members in good standing of a Canadian provincial or territorial law society, if they are immigration consultants who are members in good standing with the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants or if they are notaries who are members in good standing of the Chambre des Notaires du Québec. This is meant to prevent fraud on prospective immigrants.


  • You can check the status of your application on the CIC website. When checking online, be sure you have a copy of your application or your receipts or any letter issued to you by CIC.

    Australians aged 18-30 can apply under the Working Holiday Program Canada. Successful applicants will be granted a work permit which will allow them to work in Canada for up to 24 months. The website of the High Commission of Canada in Australia provides details on the program (see Resources).

    Holders of Australian passport do not require a temporary resident visa to enter Canada as visitors. This provides an easier opportunity for Australians who are visiting Canada to look for work opportunities and if they get a job offer from a Canadian employer, they can apply for a work permit from within Canada or as an immigrant under the skilled workers program.
