When applying for a United States immigrant or non-immigrant visa, checking its status on a regular basis online is the best way to keep abreast of the latest visa changes and notifications.

Locate your USCIS (United States Immigration and Citizenship Services) receipt number. This number is usually found in the upper left-hand corner box entitled "receipt number".

Go to the USCIS website at uscis.gov and locate the "After I File" section on the left hand section of the website. Click on the "Check my Case Status" link.

Input your receipt number into the "Enter your receipt number" field and click the green "Check Status" button. The website will provide your visa application status.

Check by phone by calling the USCIS customer service line at 1-800-375-5283. You will need your visa application receipt number.

Sign up for the USCIS application status email system that will send automatic case updates to your email or cell phone.

Schedule an in-person appointment with a USCIS clerk through the use of the Infopass system; it schedules appointments and issues a printable confirmation number with receipt.
