The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers a free online service called Where's My Refund that allows you to find information about your tax return using your Social Security Number. This service will let you know the status of your return with the IRS, any problems or errors with your return and the mailing date or direct-deposit date of your tax refund. The information available through the Where's My Refund service is updated daily and is the most up-to-date information available from the IRS about your tax return.

Open a web browser on your computer and go to the IRS Where's My Refund tool (see Resources).

Enter your Social Security Number in the appropriate text box.

Select the filing status you used on the tax return you want to find information about.

Enter the exact whole-dollar refund amount from the tax return you want to find information about.

Click the gray "Submit" button to display information from your tax return including the mailing date or direct-deposit date of your refund, the status of your return with the IRS and any problems or errors with your return.

Tips

  • Alternatively, you can call the IRS at (800) 829-1040. You can normally get more detailed information about your tax return by calling the IRS and giving them your Social Security Number.
