You must take tangible actions to show that you intend Florida to be your permanent home. Opening a Florida bank account, filing Florida taxes and spending the majority of your time in Florida are ways to establish residency in the state. The more ties you establish with Florida, the better.

File a Declaration of Domicile with the clerk of circuit court in the county where you live. This document is a sworn statement that you want to make Florida your permanent home.

Obtain a Florida driver's license. Take your photo identification, proof of your date of birth, Social Security card and two pieces of mail with your Florida address to the local Florida Highway Safety Department to get your license. The 2010 fee for a Class E driver's license is $48.

Register your car in Florida. Bring your original title and proof of insurance to the local county tax collector or license plate agency. The fee to register your vehicle is determined by the vehicle's weight. The fee can range from $46.15 to $70.65 for 2010.

Register to vote in Florida. Print out the voter registration application from the Florida Board of Elections website. You can mail or bring the completed and signed application to the local county Supervisor of Elections office.
