Drivers who have received a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction in the Sunshine State or in another state while in possession of a Florida driver's license must attend a DUI program authorized by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). The FLHSMV provides oversight for programs located across the state.
Those attending DUI programs cannot do so online. They must go to a physical location to participate in classes in the area where they live, work or go to school. However, the court sometimes grants exemptions to allow attendees to go to other locations. Most programs usually provide day, night and weekend classes, so participants can find a class schedule that works for them.

Authorized DUI Programs in the State of Florida
According to the Florida law firm Goldman Wetzel, any Florida driver who receives a DUI conviction must complete a program licensed and regulated by the FLHSMV. The department certifies instructors, investigates grievances, periodically measures the programs' effectiveness, and makes changes where needed. The FLHSMV's Bureau of Motorist Compliance also provides education and training to personnel and develops the curriculum for the programs administered.
The goal of the programs is to educate attendees about the effects of driving while impaired, assess their substance abuse issues and help them find alternatives to driving under the influence. The programs also satisfy the court and licensing requirements.
Differences Between Level I and Level II DUI Programs
According to Florida Statutes Motor Vehicles Section 322.292, when sentenced with a DUI, the court will order a defendant to attend either a Level I DUI course for first-time offenders or a Level II course for repeat offenders.
The Level I course is a minimum of 12 hours of classroom time. It offers interactive and informative educational techniques about the use of alcohol and drugs and evaluations for substance abuse and psychosocial care. Each school has different prices for their Level I courses, but attendees usually pay at least $260.
The Level II course is a minimum of 21 hours and incorporates mostly interactive techniques in a group setting to deliver educational lessons to participants. This course is smaller than the Level I course; it does not exceed more than 15 students. It focuses primarily on treatment and refers most students to a treatment provider. The Level II class fee depends on school location, but is usually at least $425.
