In order to do many things in the United States and abroad you need an original copy of your birth certificate. Obtaining the original birth certificate is something that is rather difficult to do. But obtaining a copy of the original birth certificate is rather easy.
How to Get an Original Copy of a Birth Certificate
Go to the vital records office in any county in the state in which you were born. If you are not sure in which state you were born, ask your relatives who were around for the event. If you are nowhere near the state you were born, ask someone who lives in that state to go get it for you. Anyone can obtain a birth certificate of anyone else, as long as they have the appropriate information.
Fill out the proper paperwork requested to obtain the original copy of a birth certificate. You will likely need your full name, your mother and father's names, your mother's maiden name, the date you were born and the location you were born. The vital records office personnel may ask for additional information from you, but this data is the most critical to obtain the birth certificate.
Pay the fee for the birth certificate. Usually this runs about $20, depending on which state your are purchasing it from.
Wait for your order to be placed by sitting in the waiting room. You may also mail in your request by first asking the vital records office for the proper form, filling it out and mailing it in with the proper fee. The vital records office will then mail you the original copy of your birth certificate.
Check the birth certificate once it's handed to you, and verify that it is actually yours. Mistakes do happen.
Contact the hospital at which you were born, if you'd like to obtain the original birth certificate. They probably won't give it to you. Your parents might also have the original birth certificate for you. The vital records office only distributes copies of the originals.
