How to Locate a Person That is in a Federal Prison

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is the agency responsible for administrating Federal prisons in the United States. The Federal Bureau of Prisons is a division of the U.S. Department of Justice. If you are trying to find a person that is currently in a Federal Prison, you can use the Federal Bureau of Prisons' online inmate locator tool.

Go to Bop.gov and click the "Inmate Locator" link on the left-side of the menu at the top of the home page.

Enter the first and last name in the appropriate text fields. You can also narrow your search by selecting the prisoner's race or sex from the drop-down menus, or by entering the age of the prisoner. Alternatively you can search for a Federal prisoner by ID number. Select the type of number from the drop-down menu, and enter the number in the search field.

Click the "Search" button to display detailed information about prisoners that match your search query.

Click the name of the prison. This is located under the location field. It will display information about where the Federal prisoner is currently incarcerated.
